The first days at home
The postnatal weeks: settling into your new everyday life
When you come home with your baby after the birth, a very particular chapter begins: the postnatal period, known in German as the Wochenbett. It is a time of getting to know one another, of healing, and of arriving together as a family. Many parents feel an urge to “function” again quickly – but right now the opposite is what matters.
Give yourself time
Your body has done something extraordinary and now needs rest in order to recover. The postnatal weeks are not about running the household or entertaining guests. They are about cuddling up in bed or on the sofa, learning to read your baby's signals, and growing together as a family.
What will do you good now
- Islands of rest: Sleep or rest when your baby sleeps. Accepting help with the household from friends or family is not a sign of weakness – it is very wise.
- Good food: Nourishing, warm meals give you strength. Perhaps you cooked ahead, or people who love you bring something round.
- Managing visitors: You decide when and for how long you want visitors. It is completely fine to spend the first days just as a small family.
For your baby
In these first weeks your child needs one thing above all: your closeness. Skin contact, warmth and a sense of safety are the most important foundations for a good start. Everything else – toys, classes, appointments – can wait.
Finding your confidence
It is normal if things don't run smoothly at first, or if your emotions ride a rollercoaster. Trust your intuition and trust that time will help.
During my postnatal visits I accompany you step by step through this sensitive phase, checking on your health and your baby's development. You are not alone – we walk this path together.
